Joseph W. Sullivan

Joseph W. Sullivan of Brockton died Monday after a brief illness. Born in 1937, Mr. Sullivan was a lifelong resident of Brockton, attended Brockton schools, and graduated from Brockton High School in 1956. After graduation, he served in the Naval Reserves, summered on the Hyannis Police Department, and worked at Fore River Shipyard before going to college. Mr. Sullivan graduated from Northeastern University in 1965 and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College in 1970. 

Mr. Sullivan taught English at Brockton High School for over 30 years and upon retiring he moved into the Science Department and ran the school’s greenhouse for another 15 years. Gardening was his favorite avocation and he spent countless hours in his own home garden in Brockton.

Mr. Sullivan was active in the Brookfield Little League as well as Brockton Youth Soccer Association and YMCA Basketball programs.

The son of the late William M. and Myrtle (Hayward) Sullivan of Brockton, Joe leaves his wife of 52 years Patricia (MacMurtry) Sullivan of Brockton; sons William of Brockton, Sean [and his wife Donna] of Lynn, Michael [and his wife Kathleen] of Brockton, and Ryan [and his fiancé Kristen DeMoura] of Brockton; grandchildren Connor and Caitlin Sullivan of Brockton and Eva Sullivan of East Bridgewater; sister Rose (Sullivan) Anderson of Gettysburg, Pa., and brothers Larry [and his wife Kathleen] Sullivan of Bridgewater, and Roger [and his wife Lois]Sullivan of East Bridgewater, as well as many nieces and nephews in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. 

Visiting hours will be held in the Sampson-Hickey-Grenier Funeral Home 309 Main Street, Brockton on Saturday December 29th  1-4 PM with a memorial
service at 4 PM  Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
